The cat was already in my arms when I noticed the second purr. I was standing on the corner of Delancey and Orchard, and the cat was warm and heavy, the way a sleeping child is heavy, and it purred on the left side of its chest and then, a half-beat later, on the right. I could feel both vibrations through my forearms, out of sync like two engines. The fish market on the corner sold iced shrimp out of a bathtub, and the smell of it — cold brine and cardboard — stayed with me.
